If you’re thinking about learning guitar, you might be wondering whether to go for traditional in-person lessons or try online lessons. Both have their place, but let’s look at the pros and cons.
In-person lessons
Great for kids who benefit from having someone physically in the room.
Useful if you want a local teacher for accountability.
Can feel more personal.
Online lessons
Way more convenient — no travel, no wasted time.
Flexible scheduling, especially if you’re balancing work or family.
Access to teachers outside your area (like me!).
Usually more affordable since you’re not paying for studio space.
Technology (Zoom, screen sharing, audio tools) makes demonstrations and resources easy to share in real time.
For most adult beginners and intermediate players, online lessons are the better option — especially if you want flexibility and a teacher who matches your style, rather than the nearest teacher available.
I’ve been teaching online since 2020, and I can say with confidence: if your internet connection is stable, online lessons are every bit as effective as in-person sessions.
The best way to decide? Try a free 30-minute trial lesson and see how it feels.
